#ComposersChristmas Day 8: There Will Be Eggnog

Leading up to this holiday season, to overcome my fear of holiday music, I decided to challenge myself and create some holiday music in the style of my favorite composers, film scores, and themes. Each one takes me a day to create. This is my (unexpected) mashup of “Eat Him by His Own Light” from the film There Will Be Blood by @official_greenwood & We Wish You A Merry Christmas. Not the most holiday sounding of music, but the “There Will Be Blood” score was incredibly influential for me.

To be honest, before this score I wasn't an avid listener of bluegrass music and hadn't written anything in the style. Through researching the history of Nenana and Alaska, the cultures and traditions that formed its Athabaskan fiddling style, collaborating with some amazing Colorado bluegrass musicians, and picking up some skills on the spoons, harmonium, and washboard, I now have a whole new appreciation. We had a lot of fun creating this one and I hope you have a lot of fun listening to my take on bluegrass music. Above all, during these rough times, I hope the spirit of Nenana "warms your chilly heart, and brings you to your knees." For those of you who would like to purchase the album, I'll be donating all profits to charity and for the immediate time being, I'd like to put funds towards a COVID-19 related relief effort. Nearing the end of mixing at @evergroove studios with Brad Smalling. We had some good times morphing the #filmscore ‘s #bluegrass style into vintage #8-bit #chiptunes #music.
I recently had the pleasure to collaborate with director Tim Kaminski in creating a soundtrack for his feature documentary "Classic". I absolutely can't wait for the world to see this film because it has brought so many smiles and laughs to me for the past few months.

The film is set in the small town of Nenana, Alaska, where a 100-year-old tradition of betting on the ice melt is put to the test when changing times force the town, its charming residents, and this historic contest into the 21st century.

I recently had the pleasure to collaborate with director Tim Kaminski in creating a soundtrack for his feature documentary "Classic". I absolutely can't wait for the world to see this film because it has brought so many smiles and laughs to me for the past few months.

The film is set in the small town of #nenana, #alaska, where a 100-year-old tradition of betting on the ice melt is put to the test when changing times force the town, its charming residents, and this historic contest into the 21st century.

For the film's soundtrack, I researched the old-time #athabaskan #fiddle style that is unique for this region of the U.S. This style was originally influenced by the traders from the Hudson Bay Company and is a fusion of #music from Scotland, Ireland, the Orkney Islands, French Canada, and indigenous people of Alaska. Tim and I imagined that majority of the instruments used in the soundtrack had to be carried on the backs of traders trekking across the North American wilderness, and had to have the feel of a group of musicians playing together on a front porch. We recorded at @evergroove Studio in Evergreen, an incredible studio that was fitting for the film's setting since its surrounded by #Colorado wilderness.

For the recording session we embraced the "rag tag" nature of the film's story and pulled together a wide range of musicians and instruments from Colorado's vibrant bluegrass community, including Enion Pelta-Tiller and David G. Tiller from the band @taarka_music, John Ellington from the Legendary Katthouse Pickers, @greggarrisonbass of @leftoversalmonmusic, @vossling , #AjaxQuartet celloist Eric Haugen, and Taylor Sims of @bonnieandtheclydes. Brad Smalling of @evergroove has lent his recording and mixing skills to bring the score to life.
