Music co-producer @conor_abbott_brown at the helm again of the modular synth, releasing the monster from the machine. Sometimes you can’t put a finger on why these types of pulsing sounds are so terrifying and eerie, possibly conjuring images of giant War of the Worlds robots, but it’s why we used something like it in the cue “Late Night Snack”.

This cue, Time Offline, is one of my favorites and always makes me smile on @thesocialdilemma soundtrack because it sounds like we broke the strings. It plays while Ben is pacing in his room, bored and anxious without his phone. This is the point in the film when the traditional style film score we’ve heard up until this point starts to become unhinged and mechanical, and the digital side of the score starts to overtake the human played elements.

@jjake.saunders getting funky with the #electriccello for the cue “Growth Hacking” on @thesocialdilemma. Music Co-Producer @conor_abbott_brown picked up on some weird synth artifacts I had in the original sketches and doubled the parts with electric cello to go with the “digital doppelgänger” theme of the film. Loved how delightfully odd and mechanical it turned out. 🤓

Pianists Jieun Lee playing on @windovertheearth ’s rickety but mighty Hamilton upright piano from the early 1900’s. This song plays during the credits (link to album in bio), and I think this piano fits the sentiment of the ending of @thesocialdilemma . Are we going to get out of this mess? We’re going to have to, regardless of how fragile the state of things are right now.

And if played right, those low notes do indeed ring forever.

For the track “Perceptions of Beauty” in @thes

For the track “Perceptions of Beauty” in @thesocialdilemma, which plays during the scene when Isla is transfixed to beautification apps on her phone, percussionist @jonathan_sadler_muisc uses a bowed vibraphone technique to create a haunting, dreamlike tone. I learned about this technique back in high school when I played percussion in drum line and it’s one of my favorite sounds. Throughout the score I was trying to find abstract ways of playing instruments to coincide with the unnatural ways our technology is designed for us.

@conor_abbott_brown at the helm of the modular synth, releasing the monster from the machine. From the hours of recorded material from the modular synth, I chose the meatiest textures and pulses to sprinkle throughout the score for @thesocialdilemma, creating an uneasy underlying auditory aquifer to pull the audience through the narrative.

I call this little ditty “electric whale calls”. Play it right before bed and it’ll put you right to sleep.
